NetZero Week: Our Commitment to Sustainability

7th Jul, 2023

Net Zero Week aims to raise awareness and be part of the much-needed momentum required in order to reduce our carbon emissions and reach net zero, through many measures, innovative solutions, aggressive government policies and plenty of human effort.

Scotia Homes have been awarded for sustainability in the People | Place | Planet award at the Homes for Scotland Awards in June, showcasing our commitment to fulfilling one of five key pillars as part of our Vision:

Sustainability

From inception to delivery, Scotia will look to create sustainable places so that our customers and stakeholders can enjoy the benefits for generations to come. Our aim is to reduce energy use and carbon emissions across 3 key areas being: Operations; House Build; and the Lifetime Performance of our Homes.

We have expanded our understanding of embodied carbon and the effect the design of our homes has on the environment, both during construction and throughout its lifetime, so that we can target specific tangible areas we can improve on and reduce the carbon generated.

We are one of the few housebuilders to have calculated the embodied carbon generated in building our houses, so we know the exact areas we need to tackle to make improvements in to reduce our carbon footprint and get closer to net zero.

100% of the houses we build are constructed in timber frame, as a MMC & reducing the carbon footprint.

100% of the homes we build are powered using a renewable energy source, such as PV panels or Air Source Heating.

We adopt a fabric-first approach to our build specification, to reduce the energy needed to run the home.

We design our homes to achieve an average 89 in their EPC CO2 rating, therefore reducing the carbon emissions over the lifetime of the property.

We design our homes to achieve an average 86 in their EPC rating, therefore reducing the energy required to use the property.

We have fitted trackers to all white van fleet to promote safer driving practices, while at the same time improving the mpg and reducing carbon.

We study the Ecology and create a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for every new development, to positively enhance the local environment, with the introduction of planting for species food, hibernation sites, hedgehog highways, bird & bat boxes, swift bricks and wildlife ponds.

We provide a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and Pollution Prevention Plan (PPP) for every development, so that we protect the local environment during construction activities.

Take a look at our development page to find out where we're currently building energy-efficient, sustainable and quality new build homes.
